Tobi B. Goldfus, LCSW-C, BCD takes on the latest tech innovations and aggravations for both young adults and their parents. Ms Goldfus presents workshops all over the world focusing on adolescent Internet engagement — the pitfalls as well as possibilities for growth.

In addition to maintaining an active private practice, Ms Goldfus is the author of From Real Life to Cyberspace (and Back Again): Helping Our Young Clients Develop a Strong Inner Selfie (2017), a contributor to Ericksonian Therapy Now (2018), and has served on numerous faculties, including the Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (SCEH), the American Association of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH), the European Hypnosis Society (ESH), the International Hypnosis Society (ISH), the Milton Erickson Foundation of South Africa (MEISA), the Brief Therapy Conference(s), the Ericksonian International Congress(es), and the Center for the Advancement and Training of Clinical Hypnosis (CATCH).

Delving into the most current research, and integrating her knowledge of online life, ego state therapy, developmental psychology, and hypnotherapy, she teaches powerful, practical ways to redirect negative involvement toward healthier, more productive participation. Rather than shy away from knowledge, or simply demonizing technology, Ms Goldfus emphasizes how important it is to incorporate digital life into the conversation as a vital and essential aspect of every young person’s reality. She sorts for how to utilize the positive uses of digital life and social media from specific markers that show a higher risk group for traumatic or unhealthy use.

This workshop: Young People and The Power they give the Internet. Activating internal resources (or charging up the Inner Selfie) using hypnotherapy, ego state (or “parts”) therapy, and somatic experiencing to activate a healthy balance of social media with real life.

Day One will focus on recent research and helpful aggregates for understanding and assessing the new gestalt of our young client’s life, to include, the Social Media Assessment Form and 7 Stages of Smartphone Attachment as well as identifying developmental tasks and ego states being practiced online. Online hypnotic phenomena will be contrasted to that of therapeutic hypnotic phenomena. Cyber-friendly scripts, effective induction suggestions, as well as case examples and the ‘inner selfie technique’ using mobile devices will be part of experiential and group practicum. Integration and ways to utilize these assessments and techniques into real life and inner state experience will be a strong focus. A review of online and smartphone “etiquette” will be covered.

Day Two will turn to trauma on the internet, how to assess and identify, utilization of powerful externalization techniques and somatic experiencing for closing the gap of dissociation often hiding online shame and emotional pain. Those most vulnerable and how to identify them will be covered. What is healthy, dependent or compulsive use of social media sites and tailoring therapeutic interventions will include group discussion, experiential exercises and case examples. Analytics that are being used and developed for online interventions as well as therapeutic apps will be an important part of the conversation for use and understanding of our “hidden”, often secretive but at risk young client as vital to our effectiveness as clinicians.
